Close to Port Ellen, Kilnaughton Bay is one of Islay’s most accessible beaches. I have always been fascinated by the small ruined structure beside an outcrop of rocks. It was built as a changing room for a nearby mansion but it has a church-like appearance. Possibly this and the ancient graveyard at the opposite end of the beach gives this whole area a spiritual feeling.
As a child I loved this beach. I had to walk for 5 minutes through dark woods, thick with shrubbery to get there. Coming out of the darkness and onto the beach the vivid colours of the sea, sky and sands are still etched on my memory.
